WoodComp 2016 Marks 50 Years of Competition

Second Year Studios participated in the 50th annual Wood Competition this spring.  The long standing competition is supported by the Alabama Forestry Association (AFA), which arranged for a tour of Structural Wood Systems in Greenville Alabama, a visit to a logging site near Greenville and a tour of the AFA’s building in Montgomery.

The competition focused on the design of a new visitor center for the Farnsworth House in Plano, IL. The studios, led by Professors Mary English, Matt Hall, Danielle Willkens, and Justin Miller, travelled to Chicago in February. The visit included a trip to the Farnsworth House as well as tours significant buildings in the Chicago Loop. In addition to site visits and building tours students were able to visit with local alumni and firms. Dan Wheeler, of Wheeler Kearns Architects generously hosted a tour of the firm’s studio, and students met with program alumni at events in the evenings.  

The competition jury awarded three prizes:
