Pig Roast Closes the Year Long Rural Studio 20th Anniversary Celebration

Pig Roast 2014

The final event of the year-long celebration of Rural Studio’s 20th anniversary culminated with a two-day Super Pig Roast on April 25-26, 2014. Over 600 alumni, community partners, neighbors, students, families, and friends, made their way to Hale County to celebrate the twentieth year and toast the projects. Over the course of the weekend, visitors paraded across two counties behind Andrew’s blue truck (decked out in Auburn flags) to see all thirteen current projects.

The weekend kicked off Friday afternoon with site visits and presentations at Newbern Library and the Greensboro Boys & Girls Club. Pie Lab catered dinner, and the youth band of Alabama Blues Project provided musical entertainment. Following the evening’s official events, Timothy Hursley hosted a bonfire in his Alabama Silo.

Saturday morning, at the new 20K model home site, the current  Fifth Year and Outreach students presented the background of the 20K House project. The tour then continued to the grand opening of three projects in Lions Park: the Lions Park Landscape project, the Fitness trail, and the Scout Hut. After lunch, the caravan visited the sites of six 20K Houses: Rose Lee and Jason’s 20K Houses (designed and built by  Third Year students), followed by houses for Idella, Michele, Sylvia and Bobby (designed and built by  FifthYear students).

The tour concluded at Bodark Amphitheater in Newbern, where guests feasted on barbecued pig prepared by the  Third Year students and Bobby Scott as well as fried catfish, courtesy of Matt Courtney. The valediction ceremony featured inspiring speakers Robert Ivy, the Ruth family, the Mockbee family, Bruce Lanier, Theresa Costanza, Sonny Ryan, and Steve Badanes who each celebrated a different aspect of the Studio. A grand fireworks display and music by Alabama Blues Project concluded the special weekend.
