Hinson and Miller Publish New Book on Affordable Housing Design

Designed for Habitat: Collaborations with Habitat for Humanity Book Cover

David Hinson and Justin Miller, faculty in the School of Architecture, Planning, and Landscape Architecture, have authored a new book profiling successful partnerships between architects, architecture students, and Habitat for Humanity. Designed for Habitat: Collaborations with Habitat for Humanity, profiles thirteen case studies from around the U.S. that illustrate a broad range of innovative approaches to energy performance, alternative construction strategies, and responses to site context. In addition to detailed plans, sections, and photographs of each case study home, the book explores how these projects came about; the strategies used by each team to approach the design and construction process; and the obstacles they overcame to realize a successful outcome.

Two of the thirteen case studies profiled inDesigned for Habitat: Collaborations with Habitat for Humanity feature homes developed via collaborations between Auburn architecture students and Habitat for Humanity affiliates in Alabama developed under the DESIGNhabitat program, an eleven-year partnership between Auburn and the Alabama Association of Habitat Affiliates led by Hinson and Miller. “Our success with Habitat in Alabama led us to search out other partnership examples,” notes Hinson and Miller. “The outstanding examples we discovered led us to believe the stories behind these homes needed to be told and analyzed. We hope the book will encourage architects and affordable housing advocates to set their aim as high as these examples have. The book will provide insight regarding how to make their partnerships succeed.”

Writing in review ofDesigned for Habitat, John Cary states"Designed for Habitat presents potent evidence of the link between design and dignity, particularly in the context of low-income housing. … This highly-instructive, landmark book is an unmatched guide for future collaborations. It communicates so clearly and so convincingly to Habitat and its homeowners that they too deserve good design; indeed, we all do." Michael Pyatok, FAIA, Principal Pyatok Architects observes that, "This book is a must read for anyone interested in solving U.S. iniquities in housing because it’s not just about housing. These are stories about both America’s faith in itself and its tireless ingenuity. Hallelujah, amen, and hats off to all its contributors!"

Designed for Habitatis published by Routledge, and is available through a wide variety of booksellers sites on the web. David Hinson is Head of the School of Architecture, Planning, and Landscape Architecture, and Justin Miller is an Assistant Professor of Architecture at Auburn.
