Americas Studio Focuses on Outdoor Alabama

The Americas Studio, a third year architecture studio directed by Prof. Sheri Schumacher in Spring 2014, investigated the intersection of cultural practices, geographic networks and architectural regionalism on local project sites in Jacksonville, Alabama.  The focus and site coincided with the 2014 Alabama Trails Design Summit workshop with community leaders and designers focused on Trail Towns & The Alabama Trails Commission.  The studio applied the process of design thinking for social interaction and hands on fieldwork to develop new strategies, innovative ideas and design proposals for advancing outdoor recreation.  The challenge was to imagine community based design solutions for the town of Jacksonville that would provide a sustainable model for statewide Trail Towns and promote economic growth by encouraging access to the wealth of outdoor Alabama through the use of a network of trails.
