The 2014 Alabama Forestry "Wood Competition"

This spring students in the Second Year of the architecture program traveled to Chicago to visit significant buildings of the last and present century.  Students and faculty visited the home and studio of Frank Lloyd Wright, the Chicago school buildings of the loop, contemporary buildings of the waterfront and loop, and the campus of Illinois Institute of Techonology.

The campus of IIT served as the site of this year’s wood competition.  The competition brief asked students to design a new natatorium building adjacent to the student center designed by OMA.  The program invited students to consider the role a long span structural system might take in shaping the user’s experience of the pool and how a large recreational building might situate itself within the highly ordered campus of IIT.

This year’s competition was sponsored by the Alabama Forestry Association, and marks the 49th year of the organization’s sponsorship of the undergraduate competition.
